How Derwent Pencils are Made

Derwent Pencils in Cumberland have released an excellent video in conversation with Jackson’s Art, showing the process of making their world famous art pencils.

Being from the Lake District, our family has always supported local businesses and Derwent Pencils….or Cumberland Pencils as they were when I was younger, always featured in my Christmas and Birthday presents.

Now I have an extensive collection of Derwent products and use the watercolour and art pencils regularly. Some of my pencils are still from the days when I used pocket money to purchase a new one each month. These sport the old “Cumberland Pencil Co.” logo.

I use the Inktense range when drawing or painting directly to fabric as the colours are permanent. Some of the Inktense blocks, I will even use to dye small quantities of fabric by shaving pieces from the block into water or fabric medium.

Needless to say, Derwent Pencil products still feature on my present wish lists…..but this means my family are never stuck for what to buy and the sense of joy at receiving them is the same as it was years ago.
