About the author
Shuji Tamura is a highly experienced tutor and designer of Japanese embroidery.
After 18 years training under the late embroidery master Iwao Saito, he was designated Saito’s successor.
In 1989 Shuji Tamura and his wife Masa founded the non profit making Japanese Embroidery Centre in Atlana, USA.
The organisation seeks to promote the techniques and spiritual aspect of Japanese embroidery and to perpetuate the uncompromising quality of the work based on Nui-do (the way of embroidery).
The centre has trained students to tutor standard and they now teach this wonderful skill all over the world.

The Techniques of Japanese Embroidery opens by giving a concise history of Japanese embroidery, lavishly illustrated with over 90 colour photographs.
Following pages provide the reader with information on Japanese silk thread, materials, tools and the method of setting up a unique Japanese embroidery frame.
The main part of the book is devoted to Japanese embroidery stitches and the embroiderer is provided with over 50 well illustrated techniques including their line diagrams.
There is plenty here to keep the embroiderer happy, learning these specialised stitching techniques which include holding, layering, superimposed preparation, fuzzy effect, knots and braided cords.
Metallic threads and gold work are an integral feature of many of the designs which create stunning depth and texture.
Our opinion
As a tutor, I feel that this is an invaluable book for any embroiderer and the lavish illustrations makes it a great table book that will amaze even the non embroiderer and maybe even inspire them to learn.
There are a number of Japanese techniques which can easily be used in other embroidery styles to make life easier for the embroiderer and to create unique braiding techniques and finishes.
This book always travels with me to my courses and raises many favourable comments.
